Tasks

- Task 1

This task aimed to acquire observational data at different spatial scales in order to determine the phenology changes and feed models in T3. We determined phenology variability among bioclimate regions and across years (including changes over several decades; T1.1) and among forested versus urban areas (T1.2). We also determined temperature within micro-habitats (T1.3). In addition to the direct field observations, neutral genetic markers were used to assess possible long-distance migration events and their role in local phenology variability (T1.4).

- Task 2

This task aimed to determine stage-specific development rates depending on temperature (T2.1), stage-specific tolerance to thermal stress (T2.2), and thermal adaptations and trade-offs among main biological functions using RNAseq approaches on stressed individuals (T2.3).

- Task 3

This task aimed at developing mathematical models to simulate the PPM phenology (T3.2-3.3) and its effects on the population spread (T3.4). To feed these models, we estimated the temperature actually experienced by individuals (in egg-masses and in winter tents) (T3.1).

- Task 4

This task aimed at interacting with the society. We created an observer network to motivate non-academic collaborators to report PPM phenology events (T4.1) and we adapted a smartphone application (T4.3) in order to collect a larger amount of phenological data. We also made a survey to identify the needs of the society to set up effective biocontrol methods and to limit urtication risks (T4.2) and we developed a tailor-made management tool fit for purpose for the society (T4.4).

- Task 5

This task was dedicated to the project management and coordination, the communication inside the consortium and the communication with the scientific community and the society.

    * final project meeting
    * meeting dedicaced to forest and green spaces managers : "Pine Processionary: What’s New in Risk Management ?"
    * meeting dedicated to the general public : "Caterpillars and men. They “sting”, they scratch, sometimes more… While insects are in global decline, some stinging caterpillars are a public health concern. For 10 years, our territory has been a place of experimentation to reconcile public health and biodiversity preservation".
    * launch of the URTIQUAND network, an observer network for monitoring the phenology of the pine processionary
